Fiji now says efforts to release 45 captured Fijian peacekeepers are continuing.

In a statement, the government says its envoy Major General Ioane Naivalurua is in talks with all the authorities and it says these have been 'progressive'.

The former police commissioner flew to New York earlier this week to work on the release of the peacekeepers who were seized by a Syrian rebel group two weeks ago in the Golan Heights.

Fiji's Army Commander Brigadier General Mosese Tikoitoga has expressed confidence Fiji's envoy and other diplomatic missions will secure the safe release of the troops.

The Fiji government earlier issued messages on Twitter saying the troops should be released unconditionally some time this week.
