Latest on Fiji soldiers expected today

The Fiji military commander, Brigadier General Mosese Tikoitoga, is today again due to brief the media about the negotiations to free 45 Fiji peacekeepers held by Syrian rebels.

Yesterday's briefing appeared to confirm that their release was imminent and unconditional but within hours the Fiji government redefined the situation and said negotiations were still continuing.

The Al Nusra Front seized the Fijians in the Golan Heights two weeks ago, demanding that the group be removed from the United Nations terrorism list, be given humanitarian aid and compensation for the killing of some of its fighters.

Fiji has said it remains committed to serving with the UN force in the Golan Heights and is ready to replace the 45 men once they are freed.
