NGO wants Solomons parties to sign integrity pledge

1:48 pm on 23 September 2014

Transparency Solomon Islands says the National Transformation Party is the only political party to have signed its Election Integrity Pledge to refrain from corrupt activities during campaigning.

Its executive officer, Daniel Fenua, says the Integrity Pledge has no legal standing, but is a commitment by candidates to be transparent and accountable before, during and after the election.

Mr Fenua says if candidates sign the pledge, they will be monitored, and if they are found to be involved in vote-buying or accepting bribes they will have broken the trust of the people.

He says while the NTP is the only party to have signed, there has been a lot of interest from others.

"I would like to encourage the political parties or independent candidates who will be contesting independently to come forward and sign the pledge. It does not have a legal footing but corruption is eating up all our resources, corruption is undermining development in the country. I think the first step to fighting corruption is integrity in itself."

The election is expected to be held in November.
