4:41 pm on 30 September 2014

The Solomon Islands Ministry of Environment is concerned for the preservation of the country's World Heritage listed site - Lake Tegano, on Rennel Island.

Tegano was last year put on UNESCO's endangered list, as logging intensified on Rennel.

There is also a push to mine bauxite on the island.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Enviroment, Melchior Mataki, says although the Rennel people want to benefit from their natural resources they must be careful how they go about it.

"From the Ministry of Environment, we would like to go down the line of ensuring, that developments are really sustainable. In other words, that developments, would be carried out, do not have a large environmental footprint, that is irreversible."
