The Governor General of Solomon Islands, Sir Frank Kabui, this morning signed the proclamation for the 2014 National Elections to be held on Wednesday the 19th of November.

The signing and gazetting of the proclamation will also start a two week nomination process for those intending to contest the polls.

The Solomon Islands Electoral Commission says just over 280,000 voters, (287,567) have registered for the elections with the final list showing just over 139,000 female(139,059) and 148,000 (148,508) male electors.

The Chief Electoral Officer, Polycarp Haununu, says the Biometric Voter Registration Process successfully removed 160,000 fraudulent, incorrect or duplicate registrations.

He says the new, clean voter list will contribute to the running of a fair and credible election.

The Electoral Commission is now printing the electoral rolls that will feature a picture of every registered voter and is one of several safety measures to ensure only one vote per person is cast.
