Papua New Guinea won't be at this weekend's Gold Coast Sevens tournament but the country is eying up a rugby revival after impressing at last weekend's Oceania Championship.
The Pukpuks finished fifth behind established World Series teams Fiji, New Zealand, Samoa and Australia.
Victory over Tonga in the playoff for fifth place also secured their place at next year's IRB tournaments in Wellington and Hong Kong.
PNG last competed on the World Series in 2011 and team manager Kori Chan says it was just the result they needed.
"I think we can use this as a catalyst for us to really drive a strong sevens programme, or even just an overall strong rugby programme. I think it's probably what our country has needed. The beauty about rugby is it is a world sport and it is going to be competed in the Olympics but I think PNG's in a very good place with definite corporate support, if need be, but I'm really looking forward to seeing what we can do over the next couple of years".
Kori Chan says the PNG squad at the Oceanias was locally based but they could include overseas-based players in the team continue to do well.
