Constitutional reforms vital in Tonga

10:59 am on 15 October 2014

A legal consultant brought in to review Tonga's judicial structure says constitutional reforms are vital.

Peter Pursglove says the country's judiciary is unworkable and incompatible with the principles of constitutional monarchy and democracy.

Mr Pursglove says Tonga had a well-functioning judiciary in the past but constitutional amendments in 2010 took the system backwards.

"It's pretty obvious that the system isn't working, it will only get worse and somebody has to bite the bullet and face reality and make the changes. And we just hope that the new bills that have been passed by the Legislature, that they will receive royal assent.'
