Fijian Elections Office records criticised

3:02 pm on 23 October 2014

Fiji's Auditor General says the Elections Office failed to keep proper records around the employment of voter registration clerks which increased the risk of fraud.

The Fiji Times reports the Auditor-General was unable to ascertain the completeness and accuracy of the allowances paid to the Electronic Voter Registration clerks in 2012 because of poor record keeping for the clerks.

It says the 2012 report stated the absence of the master list for the clerks and the Elections Office's failure to keep proper records of resignations, terminations and movement of the clerks.

The Auditor General said this increased the risk of fraud and misappropriation of funds.

The paper reports the Elections Office responded in the report stating that letters of appointments of EVR clerks were updated in the individual personnel files and records were kept by the Human Resources section.
