New Caledonia wary of chikungunya

New Caledonia has tightened the screening of passengers from French Polynesia in a bid to avert another outbreak of chikungunya.

The two territories have a direct air link, prompting officials at Noumea's airport to screen all passengers arriving from Tahiti.

French Polynesia recorded the first case less than three weeks ago, but numbers have swelled rapidly to about 200 confirmed infections, with hundreds more suspected cases.

So far New Caledonia has been clear, but has had several outbreaks in the past.
