Coalitions forming ahead of Solomons election

3:28 pm on 18 November 2014

New Solomon Islands political party legislation is already having an effect on the political dynamics in the country.

With one day to go before polling opens in Solomon Islands, coalitions are already forming.

Our correspondent in Honiara, Koroi Hawkins, reports:

"It's almost a rest day today in Honiara as parties and candidates prepare for the final surge before the elections. What is new here is that coalitions are already forming ahead of the polls, something that has never happened before in Solomon Islands. The new party legislation sets out all the rules and regulations for forming coalitions and allows parties to do so before or after the elections. Uncomfirmed reports are that there are already two distinct coalitions beginning to gel. I cannot say much more about these pre-election agreements except that one is led by caretaker Prime Minister Gordon Darcy Lilo's Solomon Islands Party of Rural Advancement. Some parties are holding their final public rallies tonight and others will do so tomorrow."
