The police officer heading the rescue effort for 29 men trapped in the Pike River Coal mine has said for the first time that rescuers are preparing for the possible loss of life.

The miners have been trapped since an explosion on Friday.

Police Superintendent Gary Knowles told a news conference on Monday night that the rescue team remains optimistic, but is keeping an open mind about all options.
