Assurance of help for mining families by minister

6:42 am on 26 November 2010

Social Development Minister Paula Bennett is assuring families affected by the Pike River mine tragedy that they will get immediate help if they need it.

She says Government ministers are very aware of the financial and emotional stresses the families, and others in the community, are facing.

Ms Bennett says anyone needing help will be accommodated.

Government agencies dealing with health, income, and employment will work alongside the Accident Compensation Corporation to offer assistance.

ACC says financial support will be available for funerals and weekly compensation to replace wages lost by those who died.

The Work & Income office in Greymouth will be used as a one-stop shop to arrange the assistance.
