Air New Zealand has put on more flights to the West Coast for people wanting to attend a remembrance ceremony for the men who lost their lives in the Pike River Coal mine.

Twenty-nine men died following explosions which began at the mine on 19 November.

The ceremony is to be held at the Omoto racecourse, near Greymouth, on Thursday.

Air New Zealand says return services are available from Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland via Christchurch until Friday.

There will be a special direct flight from Auckland to Hokitika on Thursday.

The airline says it normally runs 14 return flights a week between Christchurch and Hokitika but has flown an extra 16 since the first explosion.
