Dunedin to hold service on Friday

6:58 pm on 2 December 2010

Dunedin is to hold a memorial service at the Cathedral on Friday for the 29 workers who died in the Pike River Coal mine disaster.

On Thursday, the bells at Town Hall rang out at 2pm, signalling people in the South Island city to pause for two minutes and silently reflect.

At St Paul's Anglican Cathedral, a book of condolences was filled with messages from across the world.

One message reads: "We share in the life of your beautiful country, the delights and the sorrows".

Another reads: "My heart reaches out and all my deep sympathy to the 29 coal miners' family and friends".

Donation box taken

A donation box for the families of the Pike River Coal miners was stolen in Dunedin on Thursday morning.

Police believe a man used a shopping trolley to smash the window of The Warehouse building and break in just before 5am.

It is not known how much money was in the donation box.
