Other mines cease operations as mark of respect

6:58 pm on 2 December 2010

Mines throughout New Zealand stopped operations at 2pm on Thursday as a mark of respect to the 29 men who died at the Pike River Coal mine.

Work at Oceana Gold, which has a mine at Reefton on the West Coast and another two at the Macrae's goldfield in Otago, stopped work to mark a two-minute silence at 2pm.

Chief operating officer Mark Cadzow says a large contingent of the company's workers are attending the national remembrance service in Greymouth.

Solid Energy, which also mines coal on the West Coast, says all of its mines were closed for a time, so workers could watch the service on television.

Some would also attend another memorial service for the miners in Christchurch on Monday.
