No robots in Pike River mine - police

Updated at 11:52 am on 11 January 2011

Police say they have no imminent plans to put robots into the Pike River coal mine.

Grey District Mayor Tony Kokshoorn told Summer Report the families of the 29 men killed there, were informed on Sunday it was planned to use two robots to enter the mine soon and take footage and that the work may have already begun.

Police say they have one mine robot on standby, but using it would mean removing the 'gag' machine and doing a full risk assessment, which is not part of their immediate planning.
