Pike River submissions close at end of week

6:06 pm on 14 February 2011

Submissions of interest to take part in the Royal Commission into the Pike River mining disaster close on Friday.

Anyone can apply to give evidence to the inquiry, which will investigate the cause of the explosions that killed 29 workers at the West Coast mine on 19 November last year.

Royal Commission spokesperson Tony Wallace says applications can be made via the commission's website and already a good number of submissions have been received.

Mr Wallace says families of the victims will be consulted and do not have to lodge an expression of interest.

A preliminary hearing will take place at the Greymouth High Court on 11 March, with the inquiry to start later in the year.
