Police have arrested a man who was found on Pike River coal mine property by security staff.

The 38 year-old Dunedin man was found on Tuesday inside the mine's bath house, 9km from the West Coast mine.

Tasman Police District Commander Superintendent Gary Knowles says the incident is a reminder the mine site is a secure area and not a public place.

The man has been charged with unlawfully being in a building and will appear in the Westport District Court next month.
