Treaty settlement bills move forward under extended hours

7:38 am on 9 March 2012

The Government says extended hours in Parliament are allowing it to quickly make progress on historic Treaty of Waitangi settlement claims.

Parliament agreed to longer sitting hours for the second time this year to give five Treaty settlement bills their first readings, and to move forward four others.

The Green Party says the Government is trying to rush through these deals at the expense of some iwi.

But Treaty Negotiations Minister Chris Finlayson says the treaty claims have been around for some time and iwi are keen for them to be resolved.
