The Children's Commissioner says he wants to see a senior ministerial position devoted to children.

Russell Wills appeared before Parliament's social services committee on Wednesday for his office's yearly review.

Dr Wills told MPs a minister should oversee a portfolio on children.

And he said he would be delighted if the role was taken up by the prime minister.

Meanwhile Dr Wills also commented on the quality of social workers, saying that it is variable.

He said there should be a national standard and mandatory registration for them.
