An interim chief executive has been appointed to the new of the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment to oversee the changes.

State Services Commissioner Iain Rennie has announced that David Smol will be acting chief executive of the super ministry.

Mr Smol is the chief executive of the Ministry of Economic Development.

The new entity will be formed from a merger of the Ministries of Economic Development and Science and Innovation and the Departments of Labour and Building and Housing.

The chief executive positions at each agency will be made redundant on 1 July when the new ministry comes into effect.

Mr Smol will lead the transition process and a permanent chief executive of the super ministry will be appointed in September.
