Legislation scrapping Crown agencies passed

Updated at 10:32 pm on 30 May 2012

Legislation scrapping the Alcohol Advisory Council, the Charities Commission and the Mental Health Commission has been passed by Parliament.

The three bills passed on Wednesday night enact changes to the Government's health and charitable agencies from 1 July this year.

A new Health Promotion Agency will replace the Alcohol Advisory Council and Health Sponsorship Council.

Instead of a separate Mental Health Commission, a Mental Health Commissioner will be established within the Office of the Health and Disability Commissioner.

The functions of the Charities Commission will be transferred to the Department of Internal Affairs.
