Prison changes queried by Labour

9:56 am on 31 May 2012

Labour is questioning a Government proposal to reduce the number of investigators in the Corrections Department who catch corrupt prison officers.

A proposed restructuring would reduce the number of investigators in the professional standards unit from six to three, replacing them with two business analysts and a prevention policy and standards officer.

Labour says that means exchanging front line personnel for bureaucrats.

Corrections says the new roles would strengthen the work of the investigators.

The Corrections Association says the proposal would hopefully mean stopping any corruption happening in the first place.
