NZ urged to act over Papua violence

Updated at 11:58 am on 12 June 2012

The Green Party is urging the New Zealand Government to cut military and police ties with Indonesia following a violent rampage by Indonesian soldiers in the Papua region last week.

Reports say one person has died and 17 have been injured with dozens of homes destroyed.

Green MP Catherine Delahunty says New Zealand should be doing more to support the peace process in Papua.

Ms Delahunty says church leaders there have been calling for peace talks for a long time and New Zealand could play the same role it played when it helped broker peace in Bougainville.

She says the Indonesian military is very compromised and the Indonesian government would be the first to admit there are problems.
