Treasury boss won't investigate handling of deposit scheme

The secretary of the Treasury is refusing to investigate his agency's handling of the Crown retail deposit guarantee scheme despite a critical report from the Auditor-General.

Opposition MPs questioned Gabriel Mahklouf on Wednesday about why he was not prepared to investigate how much taxpayer money was lost because of the Treasury's poor monitoring of the scheme.

However, Mr Mahklouf said there is no point in the Treasury conducting its own inquiry.

He said he has adopted all four recommendations made in the Auditor-General's report.
