No assurance of rise in radio funding

Broadcasting Minister Craig Foss says he is committed to the current model of broadcasting, but is giving no assurance of a rise in funding any time soon.

9 July, 1962 marks the 50th anniversary of the launch of an independent news service on Radio New Zealand's predecessor, the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation.

Before then, the news usually consisted of Government statements and newspaper clippings read verbatim on air.

News now comprises a third of Radio New Zealand's budget.

Mr Foss says Radio New Zealand has performed well under a three-year funding freeze but is giving no assurance of a rise.

The network's statement of corporate intent shows funding staying roughly constant until 2016.

More about this can be heard on Insight on Sunday.
