Marriage bill sponsor delighted

The sponsor of legislation that would pave the way for same-sex marriage, Louisa Wall, says she is thrilled it looks likely to pass its first reading.

Fifty eight of 121 MPs contacted by Radio New Zealand News say they will definitely vote for the bill and seven say they definitely will not.

Of the MPs who remains undecided, enough say they are leaning towards voting yes to get the numbers over the 61 votes required to pass the legislation.

Ms Wall says she is pleased to have the support of most political leaders, including the prime minister.
