Pacific MPs divided on same-sex marriage bill

6:04 am on 17 August 2012

A second MP of Pacific descent is against the bill to legalise same-sex marriage.

National Party list MP Alfred Ngaro says he will join Labour's Su'a William Sio in voting against it.

Pacific leaders in Auckland have organised a series of public debates over a call by Mr Sio to withdraw the bill because of widespread opposition in their communities.

Mr Ngaro says the bill is not about equality because same-sex couples already get that with civil unions.

Of other Pacific MPs: Charles Chauvel and Kris Faafoi (Labour) support the bill, Sam Lotu-Iiga (National ) is undecided and Asenati Lole-Taylor (New Zealand First) wants a referendum.
