Councils told to make more land available for housing

Updated at 11:40 am on 21 August 2012

Finance Minister Bill English has told councils to make more land available for housing or face the prospect of the Government changing the rules.

Mr English says the Government is still working on its response to the Productivity Commission's report into housing affordability.

Lack of land available for new subdivisions has been blamed for helping push up house prices.

Mr English says the Government has been talking to councils about making more land available for housing, but until recently that was not happening.
