Parliament asked to consider splitting child allowance

Parliament has been asked to consider splitting the child allowance received by parents on a benefit, if they have shared and equal custody.

A sickness beneficiary who appeared before the Social Services select committee on Wednesday said his former partner receives an extra $88 per week for having a dependent child, but he gets no extra support.

Curtis Antony Nixon said his former partner is on the Domestic Purposes Benefit and they have shared custody of their daughter on a week-by-week basis.

He wants the law changed so that allowance can be split between parents.

Mr Nixon said he has asked the Ministry of Social Development for information about other fathers in the same position, but was told they don't record that sort of detail.
