Govt pushes forest industry for long-term policy

7:48 am on 6 May 2009

The Government is pushing the forestry industry to develop its own long-term national policy.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has issued a study of the issues facing the sector over the next 20 years.

The Farm Forestry Association says the 200-page report is a good summary of the issues but lacks firm policy conclusions.

President Patrick Milne says the sector is a disorganised shambles and desperately needs Government leadership.

But Forestry Minister David Carter, says there are a whole range of industry organisations ready to step up and create a common long-term policy agenda.
