Moroney disappointed at English's response

The Labour MP behind legislation to extend paid parental leave, Sue Moroney, is disappointed the Finance Minister will still scuttle it, despite new figures showing it would cost a third of what he claimed it would.

The latest official figure for extending the scheme from 14 to 26 weeks is $166 million over three years.

Bill English had said it would cost $530 million based on figures from the Treasury, as well as Labour's election-time costings, and he will use the Government's financial veto to block it.

However, Treasury says it hasn't provided any advice on extending paid parental leave.

Ms Moroney says Mr English should base decisions like this on official information and wait for the findings of the select committee.
