NZ signs new defence deal with Philippines

7:35 pm on 23 October 2012

A new defence arrangement between New Zealand and the Philippines has been signed at Parliament.

It was one of three formal agreements signed at the end of a two-day visit by the Philippines President Benigno Aquino.

Prime Minister John Key says the defence agreement puts into writing what is already taking place.

He says it is an important step to codify current practices, and the Government is looking forward to working more closely with the Philippines in the years to come.

Areas of defence co-operation between the two countries listed in the arrangement include military training and exercises, and information exchanges.

President Aquino was given a state welcome, including a 21-gun salute, at Government House in Wellington.

The president arrived in Auckland on Monday, and flew to Wellington on Tuesday for talks with the Prime Minister.

His first stop in the capital was Government House, where he was met by the Governor General, Lieutenant-General Sir Jerry Mateparae.

The two leaders also signed a working holidays agreement between the Philippines and New Zealand, before President Aquino left for Australia on Tuesday night.
