The MP sponsoring a bill aimed at cracking down on gang intimidation says he was motivated to draft it after the death of two young men in his electorate.
The legislation, in the name of National MP for Rotorua Todd McClay, would prohibit the wearing of gang patches or insignia in public buildings and grounds.
He told MPs considering the bill on Wednesday that the public should not have to put up with intimidating behaviour from patched gang members.
Mr McClay says the fatal attack on the two young men highlights the trauma and damage gangs are inflicting on the community and he'd like to see gangs eventually outlawed.
