Trawler ban applauded

Updated at 12:39 pm on 21 November 2012

The Green Party says the confirmation of a two-year ban by the Australian government on a super-trawler fishing in Australian waters is a clear signal such a vessel would be inappropriate in New Zealand waters.

The vessel in question is the Abel Tasman, operated by Seafish Tasmania.

The Greens say any move by the company to fish in New Zealand waters with the vessel should be resisted by the Government.

Egmont Seafoods says such a ship operating around New Zealand's coasts would destroy the livelihoods of inshore fishing companies.
