Thumbs down to 'Mondayise' bill

4:32 pm on 12 December 2012

A select committee has recommended that a bill allowing a holiday when ANZAC and Waitangi days fall on the weekend should not be passed into law.

In its report, the Transport and Industrial Relations Committee says if the House decides the bill should proceed, then some changes should be made.

Those include bringing it into effect in 2014 so that the public has time to prepare and also clarifying that only one public holiday can be taken, either for ANZAC or Waitangi Day.

The Labour and Green Parties supported the bill proceeding, saying New Zealand workers deserve their legislated 11 public holidays every year, rather than only in five of every seven years.
