NZ travel sanctions on Fiji ministers relaxed

Senior members of the military government in Fiji are being allowed into New Zealand as the result of a loosening of travel sanctions.

Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully said New Zealand and Australia agreed several months ago to relax travel restrictions for Fiji officials who can help the country return to democracy.

He said some individuals are still banned, but there is now "a big list" of high-ranking officials and government ministers who are allowed to enter New Zealand.

Mr McCully said New Zealand and Australia want to encourage more civilians into Fiji's government and the travel restrictions were a big deterrent.
