Disappointment at decision by Speaker

7:45 pm on 11 February 2013

The Green and Labour parties are disappointed at a decision by the Speaker to stop a West Papuan politician from speaking at Parliament.

David Carter turned down an application from the Green, Labour and Mana parties to host Benny Wenda at a public function in the west foyer of Parliament on the grounds that it's not appropriate.

Mr Wenda is the head of a campaign for the independence of West Papua, which is part of Indonesia.

Green MP Catherine Delahunty says the decision goes against the spirit of Parliament, where a range of views should be heard.

Labour MP Maryan Street says the Speaker should base his decision on principle, not on whether or not the Government is uncomfortable about it.

Pointing out that Mr Wenda has been a guest of the British and European parliaments, Ms Street asks: "Why can he not be hosted at the New Zealand Parliament - even if the Government does not agree with his position? Parliament is more than government."

Prime Minister John Key says the decision is the Speaker's alone but it could have been based on the way New Zealand perceives Indonesian rights.

The Speaker's office says MPs can raise any concerns with the Parliamentary Service Commission.

Mr Wenda will instead speak at Victoria University on Tuesday.
