Govt considers national framework for water quality

9:37 pm on 9 March 2013

The Government is considering writing a national framework for water quality.

Environment Minister Amy Adams and Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy have released a discussion document suggesting a light-handed approach to the regulation of water quality.

Ms Adams said water quality is deteriorating in parts of the country, but she does not believe regulation would be effective.

She said most people prefer to have decisions about how water is managed made by local councils and communities.

The discussion document also includes proposals to help councils deal with water management issues more efficiently, by introducing a more collaborative planning process.
