Greens want food guidelines reintroduced in schools

The Green Party has launched a nationwide petition calling on the Government to reinstate nutritional guidelines that require schools to sell healthy food.

The previous Labour-led government introduced the measure in a bid to combat childhood obesity but National scrapped the requirement earlier this year when it became the Government.

Green Party MP Sue Kedgley says she is asking the Government to make sure there is healthy food in every school.

She says 60% of children buy food in school canteens and they are going to be hugely influenced by the food on sale in those canteens.

Ms Kedgley says if nutritional guidelines are not re-introduced schools may revert to selling junk food which will undermining children's wellbeing.
