Maori Party considers a "Claytons" leadership

11:48 pm on 19 March 2013

The party's Waiariki MP, Te Ururoa Flavell, wants to take over from Pita Sharples as co-leader, but Dr Sharples does not want to stand aside.

Tensions over the leadership came to head earlier this year, when Mr Flavell made public his intention to challenge one of the co-leaders, Dr Sharples.

The other co-leader, Tariana Turia, how says it's time for the party to give serious consideration to the leadership succession - and one idea, she says, is for no single MP to be leader.

Each of the party's three MPs has different strengths, and they could each lead in a certain area, without there being a nominated leader, she says.

Dr Sharples says the idea is being discussed but he believes he has the support of the membership to stay on indefinitely.

"The bottom line is: I'm prepared to lead us until I'm dead ... I mean forever," he says.

No change can be made until the party holds its annual general meeting, which has to be before November.
