Mondayise bill a step closer to law

6:50 am on 28 March 2013

Legislation giving workers Monday off if Waitangi Day or ANZAC Day falls on a weekend is a step closer to becoming law.

The member's bill, in the name of Labour MP David Clark, has passed its committee stages unanimously on Wednesday after the National Party whips forgot to call for a party vote - despite being opposed to the bill.

Labour, the Greens, United Future, Mana, the Maori Party, New Zealand First and the independent MP Brendan Horan all support the legislation, so it had the numbers to pass anyway.

It will now come up for its third and final reading on an upcoming members' day.

When it passes, it will be the first piece of opposition legislation to pass under the National-led Government.
