Renewed call for new law on retirement villages

10:38 pm on 10 April 2013

The Retirement Commission has renewed calls for new legislation governing retirement villages to give residents better security.

The commission released a review of the sector in 2011, recommending five changes to the current law to include consultation guidelines for operators and residents and an industry standard for disputes.

Retirement Commission executive director David Kneebone told MPs on the Social Services Committee at Parliament on Wednesday it was time those recommendations were taken up.

Mr Kneebone says the commission has raised misgivings with the Government two or three times over the past two years and it is writing another review of the legislation.
