State house upgrade helping retain tradesmen

5:23 am on 21 April 2009

The construction industry says a Government upgrade of 18,000 state houses will help keep people in the trade during the recession.

The $125 million project has created nearly 1000 jobs within the industry so far.

Upgrading of more than 600 state houses is already underway.

Housing Minister Phil Heatley says almost $23 million worth of additional work has been issued to contractors since February.

Construction Industry Council chair Richard Michael says the programme is helping secure the future of the building and construction industry.
