PM defends breakfast meeting with Fletcher

4:25 pm on 24 April 2013

The Prime Minister says there was nothing inappropriate about a breakfast meeting he had with Ian Fletcher in June 2011, before Mr Fletcher was shoulder-tapped for the job of director of the Government's spy agency.

John Key rang Mr Fletcher the following month to see if he was interested in applying for the role at the Government Communications Security Bureau.

Mr Key has been under scrutiny for his involvement in the appointment of Mr Fletcher, whom he has known since childhood.

The breakfast meeting happened days before a panel to conduct interviews for the position had been selected, but at that stage Mr Fletcher had not been approached to apply.

Mr Key says they discussed economic development in Australia, but the job at the GCSB did not come up.
