New legislation will be introduced to Parliament this week forcing greater co-operatation between telecommunications companies and law enforcement agencies.

Companies are required to have interception equipment available to provide technical assistance to police and other security and intelligence agencies.

But the Telecommunications (Interception Capability and Security) Bill would also force companies to cooperate with the Government Communications Security Bureau and other agencies.

Communications Minister Amy Adams said on Monday updating the legislation will ensure that the country's telcos have a clearer understanding of how to meet their interception obligations.
