7:22 pm on 14 May 2013

The Government's controversial legislation introducing charter schools has narrowly passed its second reading in Parliament.

The Education Amendment Bill was passed by 63 votes to 57, with the support of the National Party, ACT and the Maori Party on Tuesday.

The Government intends to have the publicly-funded private schools ready to operate by the start of the next school year.

The legislation will now be debated clause by clause on the next available sitting day.
