Legislation that would ban gang insignia from government premises and council offices has been extended to include schools and police stations.

The members' bill in the name of National MP Todd McClay passed its second reading in Parliament on Wednesday night and will now be debated clause by clause.

Mr McClay said following recommendations from the law and order select committee, the bill has been changed to also ban gang insignia from schools, kindergartens and police stations.

He said young people should not be exposed to gangs and their patches in the playground.
