Mr Dunne, the United Future party leader, stepped down from his ministerial roles on Friday after refusing to comply with an investigation into the leak of a report on the Government Communications Security Bureau (GCSB).

Prime Minister John Key said on Monday that Mr McClay would pick up Mr Dunne's role as Associate Health Minister and the Revenue portfolio, however the Associate Conservation portfolio would be discontinued.

Mr Key said Mr McClay has proven himself to be a valuable member of the National caucus since he was elected in 2008. He chairs the Finance and Expenditure select committee.
