Smith confident about Auckland housing accord

Housing Minister Nick Smith is confident the Government's Housing Accord with Auckland Council will go ahead and deliver more housing.

Auckland Council is considering signing the accord as a way to fast-track the building of new homes in the city which has a housing shortage.

Dr Smith told Social Services Select Committee on Wednesday that powers to over-ride the council to ensure more houses are built would only be a last resort.

He acknowledged the Government would have to contribute to infrastructure like transport and schools in order for housing developments to go ahead, so both parties have to do their bit.

With hard work and goodwill, Dr Smith said the accord will proceed and hold.
